Travel

More than anything, my passion for living comes from the very idea of travel. But this is not an uncommon disposition. For me, it isn’t about having my picture taken in front of the Taj Mahal, or indulging in a gondola ride, or standing in Nelson Mandela’s jail cell. It’s not tourism. I’m discontent. I’m searching for something, or many things. I’m motivated by a curiosity to imagine what life would be like if I were from somewhere else, or at least if I lived someplace else. When I travel, I like to wander, to eat, to sit in cafes, to form habits, to admire, to think.

I am currently transitioning back to freelance web design after working at a nonprofit for a year. I took the job while I was applying for a Fulbright grant and to the Peace Corps, neither of which worked out, and had come to believe that I should be the kind of person who lived for those prized few weeks of vacation a year. But I’m not. 2013 will be a year of much more travel and much more exploration, mostly of myself.

I thoroughly enjoy keeping lists of things like where I would like to go and where I’ve been so far (a paltry 14 countries). To the right, you’ll find what is by no means an exhaustive inventory of the former. However, next year I envision doing a lot of solo travel, would likely visit other continents only with someone else’s company, and am feeling particularly European, so the list represents the most appealing possibilities fitting my current circumstances.

Please feel free to use the comments below to discuss where I’ve been, make suggestions about where I should visit, or note anything else that’s relavent.

Hanoi, Vietnam in 2011; Milan, Italy in 2006; Isle of Wight, England in 2010; rural Hanoi, Vietnam in 2011
